Refrigerated containers and food poisoning

refrigeration containersThe importance of hygienic and safe cold storage in the food industry is well known. There are several diseases that can be prevented through the use of industry standard refrigerated containers which are a great way of storing and transporting food products safely and effectively.

Salmonellae: Salmonellae is a well-known bacterium that causes infections and illnesses. The illness is transmitted through undercooking various products such as eggs, poultry, fish and seafood products and dairy. It’s estimated by the centre for disease control that 1 million people are affected by salmonella each year.

Symptoms can range from nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and headaches and it’s not uncommon for symptoms to return after a week. Salmonella should be treated very seriously if the patient has underlying health problems (kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, cancer or those with weakened immune systems) as this can be life threatening.

Campylobacater: This disease will share similar symptoms to salmonellae such as headaches, muscle aches, diarrhoea etc. This is the most common food related illness in the world. The illness is passed on through raw poultry (chicken or turkey) which is why these food products should always be stored and cooked thoroughly. The illness is also passed on through unpasteurised milk and contaminated water.

Staphylococcus aureus: The bacteria of this illness produce a toxin in foods such as cream-filled cakes, pies and dairy products. Symptoms include moderate to severe illness with rapid onset of nausea, severe vomiting, dizziness, and abdominal cramping.

The most likely occurrence of this illness comes from contamination of food which is not chilled properly. This is why cold storage of food is so important to health and food provider’s must ensure sufficient cold storage for food products is in place using adequate temperature controlled storage units.

Prevention of basic food poisoning can usually be achieved by adhering to some basic principles. These include hand washing and effective food storage. Many top retailers are using refrigerated containers that allow cold air can circulate effectively around the unit. Refrigerated containers can not only control the temperature, but the climate at which food is stored to significantly reduce the metabolic activity of bacteria, resulting in a fresher end product.
