Silent Middle Class Family Alcohol Epidemic

A recent study commissioned by a children’s charity has found that many middle class parents have turned to drinking due to the pressures of family life. It has been found that around two million parents drink alcohol daily and it is the highest earners that are drinking the most. Research has shown that the excessive drinking of parent does hamper their ability to be good parents despite parent’s belief that their drinking has no impact on their family life.

Parents Dependency on Alcohol

This study has found that "Parenting capacity can be adversely affected, and quality interactions with the youngest children disrupted, by parents who merely drank socially, or finished a bottle of wine over dinner. 4Children is concerned that too often this results from a profound lack of awareness amongst parents of the damage that hazardous drinking can do to their families."

Whilst parents aren’t collapsing in the street, their drinking can still have an impact on their children, this needs to be realised and acted upon. The number of parents who drink to excess and endanger their children as a result are a minority, but those who do drink to excess usually ignore the social stereotypes around alcoholism which can lead to a lack of concern over their behaviour and over reliance on alcohol.

Just because someone is not exhibiting obvious signs of alcoholism does not mean that all is well – many of the symptoms of alcohol abuse can be subtle or even appear at first glance to be positive influences on a person’s life, for instance they could seem more relaxed or laid back in their attitudes which can be a good thing…until relaxation turns into apathy and problems start to arise.
