Alcohol the True Gateway Drug

Alcohol Addiction HelpFor years people have been told that marijuana should remain illegal because it has a unique position as a “gateway drug” which will lead in time to the abuse of other, more potent drugs like cocaine or heroin. However a new study has shown that the true gateway drug to be feared is in fact alcohol – not marijuana!

The study, based on figures from the University of Michigan’s survey “Monitoring the Future” says that alcohol represents the leading type of gateway drug which commonly led to the misuse of tobacco, marijuana and other illicit substances. Students who used alcohol were also expected to show a higher likelihood of using other drugs.

The findings are believed to support previous studies in the UK and the Netherlands that the present drug classification system has little relation to the evidence of harm caused, and that targeting the problems of alcohol abuse should be a top priority for healthcare agencies throughout the world.
